INEC assures unimpeded coverage of Edo, Ondo guber polls

Published

on

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says accredited journalists for the governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states, respectively, would be granted unhindered coverage.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu gave the assurances at the commission’s quarterly consultative meeting with the media on Wednesday in Abuja.

According to him, “INEC is working with the security agencies to ensure that accredited journalists are granted unimpeded access to all voting and collation locations.’’

He, however, urged media organisations, yet to register for the election coverage in Edo, to do that before the deadline

“As the Edo State Governorship election approaches, I wish to remind media organisations that, the portal for media accreditation (https://imap.inecnigeria.org) is still open.

“As at 8.02am today, Wednesday 31st July, 2024, media organisations representing print, radio, television and online have uploaded the details of 227 personnel for the election.

“I urge you to expedite action by ensuring that all interested media organisations submit their applications before the deadline of Thursday, 5th September 2024.

“This will enable the Commission to produce and deliver the accreditation tags for your reporters, camera operators and other support staffers in good time for the election,’’ he advised.

Yakubu also urged the media to partner with the commission in encouraging registered voters in the two states to collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

He equally urged the media to continue to help in combating fake news that could hinder the smooth conduct of the polls in the two states.

“I wish to remind you of your obligation as journalists to report factually and accurately about the election and electoral activities in compliance with the ethics of your noble profession.

“You should continue to be a bulwark against fake news, misinformation and disinformation. I urge you to fully comply with the Nigerian Media Code of Election Coverage.

“Similarly, you are required to comply with the INEC guidelines for media accreditation available on our website www.inecnigeria.org,’’ he said.

In his remarks, Mr Chris Isiguzo, National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), reaffirmed media’s commitment to supporting INEC in upholding the integrity of elections in the country.

Isiguzo said that the media would continue to partner INEC to foster a democratic environment that is open, accountable, and reflective of the will of the people.

He also said that the synergy between INEC and the media was crucial as Nigeria approached the off-season governorship elections in Edo and Ondo.

“The transparency and efficiency with which elections are conducted directly influence the public’s confidence in our democratic processes.

“I am confident that INEC is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that these elections are free, fair, and credible.

“The role of the media in this process is indispensable.

“As watchdogs of society, we have the duty to report accurately and objectively, to educate the electorate, and to provide a platform for diverse voices and opinions.

“Our collaboration with INEC is essential in achieving these goals,’’ he said.

Isiguzo appealed to the security agencies to extend the necessary support and partnership with the media in order to check incessant harassments and intimidation of journalists on election duties (NAN)

Osun 2026: Oyetola, PDP Rep Wole Oke to run on APC joint ticket

Published

on

A former Governor of Osun State and current Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola has struck a deal for a joint ticket

with a member of the House of Representatives representing Obokun/Oriade constituency, Wole Oke to contest the 2026 governorship election under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), authoritative sources have said.

Political observers said the ambition of Oke to be Deputy Governor under the platform of the APC and the ongoing romance between them must have been the reasons for the serial attacks on Governor Ademola Adeleke by the legislator.

The concluded plan by the Minister to settle for Wole Oke as his running mate for the 2026 Osun governorship election on APC platform, was said to have received the blessing and endorsement of the party leadership in the state.

As part of his efforts to revive his political fortunes in Osun State, Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola has reportedly concluded arrangement with Hon. Wole Oke, who is currently in PDP, to fly the ticket of the APC for 2026.

This move, according to multiple sources will galvanize support from Osun East and destabilize the ruling PDP in the State.

Despite strong concerns of contempt amongst the Osun APC leaders and stakeholders favouring the Osun West Senatorial District, one of the core issues in the build up to 2018 and 2022 election, Oyetola has seemingly been to lure Oke into the APC with a joint ticket in 2026.

A source said, “Oke’s continuous open rebuke of Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration in Osun State has been traced to a ground plan to betray the Governor and divide the PDP to create an opportunity for the APC to launch a possible comeback to Bola Ige House.

“Oke has visited Oyetola more than 10 times since this year in several locations in Lagos, Abuja and outside Nigeria with a promise to ensure that Adeleke is sacked from office in 2026.

“Convinced that he will not secure an automatic ticket for 2027, for the seventh (7th) consecutive election, he has resorted to sabotaging the chances of the PDP and Governor Adeleke in 2027, and has made two demands from the APC, a joint ticket with Oyetola or a Senate ticket, having realized that the Oriade/Obokun federal constituency stakeholders and electorates will not return him again to the Green Chamber, for the sixth (6th) term.

“Hon. Wole Oke wants to contest for Osun Governor in 2030 and he does not want to be politically irrelevant between 2027 and 2030. He has lost the backing of all political stakeholders in his federal constituency to contest again in 2027. They have told him this is his last opportunity and that is why he is fighting everyone. His relationship with APC is just for one thing; political relevance”.

But after assessing the dangers of working against Senator Fadahunsi in Osun East Senatorial District, Oke has settled for a Deputy Governorship ticket with Oyetola.

This was agreed during a high-powered meeting that took place in Abuja, in the middle of 2024. At the meeting, Oke boasted of having control of about 80% of all political leaders in Ijesha zone, including several members of Osun State House of Assembly and can influence their movement into the APC anytime.

However, sources within the State APC have confirmed strong opposition to this development as many stakeholders have rejected the idea of the party ignoring the Osun West Senatorial District again, given that the current Governor is from the District after several years of neglect of the District, particularly by the APC.

A source said, “As we speak, a former Governor and national leader of the APC has rejected the proposal and insisted that Wole Oke’s political influence is exaggerated. Dindings from the ruling party have shown that all political leaders from Obokun/Oriade and the Ijesha Zone have deserted the lawmaker in his attempt to destabilize the ruling PDP and as such cannot deliver sufficient support from the zone.

“Many APC leaders are furious with this possibility. They know they cannot trust Wole Oke, they have asked him how many Commissioners, Special Advisers and Assembly members from the ruling PDP
he is coming with. But he has yet to give them any name. They believe he just wants to use them.”

2027: Coalition against Tinubu will collapse —Ex-Atiku campaigner

Published

A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain in Lagos State, Dr Adetokunbo Pearse, has said the opposition coalition formed to unseat President Bola Tinubu in 2027 will achieve nothing .

Pearse, a former member, Atiku Abubakar 2023 presidential campaign council, said this an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Lagos.

He was reacting to the recent announcement of an opposition coalition to challenge the All progressives Congress (APC) in the next presidential election.

Pearse predicted that the coalition would collapse in no time because it lacked a clear winning strategy.

According to him , disagreements arising from personal ambitions of the coalition sponsors will lead to its collapse.

Pearse said the PDP did not need to merge with any party to win in 2027, adding the party would emerge victorious with focus, unity and a sound strategy.

“The coalition is reckless. It is not strategic. It is that of emotional distress and will be frustrated.

“This coalition will collapse in no time,”Pease said.

Pearse noted that opposition coalitions in Nigeria had not always been successful .

“I personally have been through this before when we went from PDP To SDP in 2019 election. We were members of what we then called Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP).

“There were about 20 or 30 political parties in that group and all I can tell you is, the more the messier.

“Everything came down to zero because every political party wanted to produce the presidential candidate and that led to the end of the coalition,” Pearse said.
