A faith-based civil society organisation, Independent Hajj Reporters (IHR), has raised alarm over mounting information overload during Hajj operations, urging urgent intervention ahead of the 2027 pilgrimage.

The warning formed part of a communique issued at the conclusion of the 2026 Hajj Lecture and Awards, held at the National Mosque Auditorium, Abuja, on Thursday. The document was jointly signed by rapporteurs Muhammad Suleiman Tola and Garba Muhammad.

IHR, an umbrella body of journalists committed to advocating workable policies within the Hajj and Umrah ecosystem, described the avalanche of conflicting information as a major impediment to seamless operations. To mitigate this, the organisation disclosed that it has established a Media Monitoring Team to ensure real-time tracking and reporting of services.

The conference also drew attention to the fast-approaching deadlines for the 2027 Hajj exercise, calling on all stakeholders to intensify preparations.

According to the communique, Hajj and Umrah have transcended spirituality to become significant economic hubs, with opportunities spanning transportation, aviation, accommodation, hospitality, catering, healthcare, finance, retail, and logistics. The organisation urged operators and entrepreneurs to harness these prospects.

Describing Hajj as a global mirror for Islam and Muslims, IHR stressed the need for efficient full-package service delivery to project a positive image for Nigeria, with pilgrims’ welfare as the central priority.

The conference commended security agencies for their efforts while calling for enhanced synergy and proactiveness in safeguarding the lives and property of pilgrims and officials.

On financing, IHR acknowledged the growing influence of Islamic finance in Hajj, Umrah, and global commerce, recommending its broader adoption. The organisation further proposed the establishment of a Nigeria-Saudi Halal Investment Forum to promote bilateral trade and business relations.

To reduce costs and improve service delivery, the conference recommended the establishment of a Nigerian-owned hospital or health facility in Saudi Arabia, in compliance with host country regulations.

The communique also noted the substantial aviation component of Hajj and Umrah operations, urging increased patronage of domestic airlines, in line with Saudi guidelines and minimum requirements.

Additionally, IHR encouraged local production of Hajj essentials, including bags and ihram clothing, to stimulate Nigeria’s economic growth.

The organisation acknowledged the role of tour operators in delivering satisfactory services and enjoined them to adapt to emerging trends and challenges within the sector.
