With the tenure of Rivers State’s 23 local government chairpersons coming to an end, Governor Siminalayi Fubara has issued a directive for Heads of Local Government Administration (HLGAs) to assume control of the councils.

This directive was announced during a statewide broadcast on June 18, 2024, in Port Harcourt, marking the official conclusion of the local council leaders’ terms.

Governor Fubara emphasized the importance of maintaining constitutional order and lawfulness as the state navigates this transition.

He instructed HLGAs to step into leadership roles within their respective local government areas with renewed commitment and readiness to serve until further notice.

In his address, Governor Fubara acknowledged the dedicated service of the outgoing local government chairpersons, vice chairpersons, and councillors, who were sworn in three years ago.

Their tenure, which concluded on June 17, 2024, has been marked by significant contributions to public service and the development of Rivers State.

The governor expressed his gratitude for their sacrifices and urged continued peace and order across all local government areas.

Governor Fubara extended his appreciation to the people of Rivers State for their unwavering support, which has enabled his administration to achieve milestones across various sectors.

These include infrastructure development, healthcare improvements, educational advancements, enhanced workers’ welfare, better service delivery, agricultural progress, and social welfare initiatives.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to defending the people and promoting further infrastructural development, quality healthcare, education, and welfare services.

He highlighted the importance of unity and collaboration in building a brighter future for Rivers State and assured that the administration would continue to work towards shared goals of progress and prosperity.

Handling Potential Political Tensions
The transition directive comes amidst reports of some local government chairpersons threatening to remain in office beyond their tenure, citing a law that allegedly extends their terms by six months.

Governor Fubara’s directive to HLGAs is seen as a strategic move to circumvent potential political conflicts orchestrated by pro-Nyesom Wike lawmakers and council chairpersons.

In light of these potential tensions, Rivers State Commissioner of Police, CP Tunji Rilwan Disu, has assured that the police command is prepared to prevent any disturbances at local government secretariats, ensuring that law and order are maintained during this transition period.

Governor Fubara’s message to the people of Rivers State included heartfelt thanks for their steadfast support and dedication to the administration’s vision.

He highlighted the significant progress achieved through collective efforts and expressed his hopes for continued peace and harmony in the state.
