Google has unveiled a new selfie video sign-in feature that allows users to access their accounts using facial verification, marking another step in the technology industry’s shift away from traditional passwords toward biometric authentication.
The company announced on Thursday that the feature is designed to provide users with an alternative way to regain access to their accounts if they are locked out or unable to use their regular device.
To activate the feature, users will record a short selfie video by following on-screen prompts that require simple head movements, such as turning left, turning right, or nodding. The video captures different angles of the user’s face and is securely saved to their account.
When users later need to verify their identity, they can record another selfie video. Google will compare the new recording with the original one created during setup to confirm the person’s identity before granting access.
According to Google, the feature is designed to distinguish real users from cybercriminals attempting to use fake images or AI-generated videos to bypass security measures.
“When you use a selfie to sign in, we use multiple layers of security to help prevent impersonation attempts like fake photos and videos (i.e., deep fakes),” Google wrote in the blog post. “For example, we match your video against your saved selfie and require you to perform simple movements to prove it’s a live video. We also use our standard security practices to detect and help prevent suspicious sign-in attempts.”
The rollout reflects a broader trend across the technology sector, where companies are increasingly adopting “liveness” detection to verify that a real person—not an automated bot or manipulated video—is attempting to access an account. As artificial intelligence continues to improve the quality of synthetic media, such verification methods are becoming increasingly important for platforms handling sensitive information, financial transactions, and user identities.
While the new sign-in option is expected to make account recovery easier and strengthen protection against fraud, it is also likely to fuel ongoing debates over privacy and the collection of biometric information. Regulators in several jurisdictions have intensified scrutiny of how companies collect, store, and process facial and voice data.
Google said users remain in control of the feature, noting that selfie videos are encrypted and securely stored even when they are not in active use. The company also said users can delete their stored selfie videos from their Google accounts whenever they choose.
