A fire has broken out at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, with emergency responders currently battling the blaze.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) confirmed the incident in an official statement on Sunday, noting that its Aerodrome Rescue and Firefighting Service (ARFFS) had been immediately deployed to contain the situation.

“The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) wishes to inform the public that a fire incident has occurred at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos,” the authority stated.

FAAN added that its emergency response teams “are currently responding to the incident and working diligently to contain the situation”.

The authority has confirmed that no casualties or loss of life have been reported thus far. “Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available,” the statement added.

Context and Previous Incidents

Sunday’s incident follows a significant fire at Terminal 1 of the same airport in February 2026. That blaze destroyed critical air-to-ground communication systems used by the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), forcing air traffic controllers to rely on emergency backup equipment.

NAMA Managing Director Farouk Umar described the earlier incident as a “huge setback” that had “affected our air-to-ground communication completely”. The agency deployed backup systems from other locations to maintain operations, while inbound flights were temporarily suspended.

The February fire, which occurred at the old terminal during ongoing renovations, injured six people and forced the diversion of international flights operated by Emirates, British Airways, and Lufthansa. In September 2023, smoke was also reported at Terminal 1 following a suspected electrical spark in the baggage hall ceiling.

Current Status

As of press time, the cause of Sunday’s fire at Terminal 2 has not yet been disclosed, while emergency services continue their response efforts. FAAN has not provided details regarding potential impact on flight operations or the extent of damage to the facility.

Passengers and stakeholders are advised to await official updates from the airport authority as emergency teams complete their assessment of the affected terminal.
