The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has suspended its ongoing strike with immediate effect, following direct intervention by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.

The State Wing Executive Council (SWEC) Chairman, Abdullahi Shafa, announced the decision at a news conference on Sunday in Gwagwalada, after an emergency meeting to review the minister’s response to the dispute declared on April 20, 2026.

Key government commitments:

· N5 billion monthly package – comprising N2 billion from the FCT’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and N3 billion from the ten per cent IGR allocated to Area Councils – to implement the 40 per cent peculiar allowance and clear outstanding entitlements for primary school teachers.
· Promotion reforms – the minister has pledged to engage the FCT Civil Service Commission chairman to remove the vacancy precondition for teacher promotions and review the 2024 promotion exercise.

Shafa directed all FCT primary and secondary school teachers to resume duties on Monday, April 27. He further confirmed that no teacher would face victimisation for participating in the strike.

However, he cautioned that the council would review its position should the FCT administration fail to honour the agreement.

Shafa commended teachers for their solidarity and reaffirmed SWEC’s commitment to securing improved working conditions across the territory.
