A former media aide to Nigeria’s interior minister has called on the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command to enhance neighborhood patrols and surveillance in the wake of recent armed robberies and car thefts in Abuja.
Comrade Salihu Dantata Mahmud made the appeal after visiting a colleague whose home was attacked by armed robbers last Friday.
The robbers reportedly stole electronics and a car, but the vehicle was abandoned along the Kubwa expressway after it broke down, allowing the suspects to escape with the electronics.
“Increased neighborhood patrols within the FCT metropolis and suburbs could help prevent such incidents,” Mahmud said.
He also referenced a separate carjacking last week, in which a dark-colored Prado SUV with diplomatic plates was stolen near Skylark Pharmacy on Ladoke Akintola Boulevard, Garki Two, around 7 p.m.
“These crimes could have been averted with proactive policing. I suggest an enhanced patrol strategy, particularly as we approach the festive season, to ensure the safety of residents,” he added.
The FCT Police Command is yet to respond to the calls for increased patrols or provide updates on the incidents. Rising insecurity, especially during the end-of-year festivities, has heightened concerns among residents in Abuja, prompting appeals for stronger law enforcement measures.
