Former Benue State Governor and Senator, Gabriel Suswam, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party.

Suswam announced his decision in a resignation letter addressed to his ward, Mbagber Council Ward, in Logo Local Government Area of Benue State.

The letter, dated Wednesday and signed by the former governor, stated that his resignation took effect immediately.

He said the decision was taken after deep reflection, noting that the PDP had given him the platform to serve Nigeria as a member of the House of Representatives, governor and senator.

Suswam, however, lamented that the party had lost the values of cohesion, internal democracy and progressive opposition which once defined it.

According to him, the PDP is now weighed down by persistent and unresolved internal conflicts bordering on leadership, discipline and ideology.

He said several reconciliation efforts and assurances had failed to resolve the crises, leaving the party in what he described as a permanent state of dysfunction.

“The PDP today appears to be perpetually trapped in crisis mode; an institution in political intensive care,” Suswam said.

The former senator added that he could no longer reconcile his membership of the party with his personal convictions and political philosophy.

He stressed that political parties should be platforms for ideas and discipline, not arenas for endless internal warfare.

Suswam said it was honourable and necessary for him to step aside, while wishing the party well if it someday resolves its internal contradictions.

He also thanked PDP members at all levels for the opportunity to serve and for the shared political journey over the years.
