Mohammed Kudus netted his inaugural goal for Tottenham Hotspur, propelling the team to second place in the Premier League following a 2-1 triumph over Leeds United on Saturday. This victory ended Leeds’ impressive unbeaten streak at home, spanning 24 matches.
The first half was a thrilling exchange, with Mathys Tel initially putting Spurs ahead before Noah Okafor equalized for Leeds. Kudus secured the win for Tottenham just before the hour mark, showcasing the team’s enhanced defensive resilience under manager Thomas Frank, which ultimately resulted in Leeds suffering their first league loss at Elland Road since September 2024.
With this win, Spurs are now just one point behind league leaders Liverpool. However, Arsenal has the opportunity to claim the top spot later on Saturday as they prepare to face West Ham.
In recent matches, Tottenham had to rally late to avoid defeat against both bottom-placed Wolves and Champions League newcomers Bodo/Glimt. Frank made six changes to the lineup that played in the Arctic Circle on Tuesday, leading to a more dynamic performance from the visitors.
Leeds will reflect on missed opportunities that contributed to their first league defeat at home since falling to Burnley. Joe Rodon nearly put Leeds ahead early on, heading Sean Longstaff’s free-kick against the post just seven minutes into the match.
Tel, who had been omitted from Spurs’ Champions League squad due to a lackluster start since permanently joining from Bayern Munich, seized his rare opportunity to start in a front three, scoring his first goal of the season. Kudus assisted Tel, whose powerful shot deflected off Pascal Struijk, leaving goalkeeper Karl Darlow with no chance.
On the other end, a swift counter-attack from Spurs led to Kudus creating a chance, although Leeds deserved at least a draw by halftime. Tottenham’s goalkeeper, Guglielmo Vicario, struggled to deal with a shot from Brenden Aaronson, allowing Okafor to tap in an equalizer for his second goal with Leeds.
As the second half unfolded in a similar end-to-end fashion, Vicario denied a chance from Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Kudus then delivered the decisive moment with a powerful shot that deflected off Gabriel Gudmundsson, catching Darlow off guard.
Last season, Tottenham was notorious for dropping points from winning positions, finishing just above the relegation zone in 17th place. Under Frank’s guidance, however, Spurs have yet to concede points after taking the lead in matches.
The visitors faced a tense moment deep in stoppage time when Vicario redeemed himself with a crucial save from Joel Piroe. Following this defeat, Leeds finds themselves in 12th place with eight points after their first seven games.
