The Enugu State Police Command has established a Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) to tackle armed robbery, kidnapping and other serious offences, Commissioner of Police Mamman Giwa has announced.

CSP Henry Imo has been appointed as commander of the new unit, with ASP Ebenezer Godwin serving as its media liaison officer.

Mr Giwa made the appointments public on Saturday in Enugu, following a workshop on human rights, social intelligence and emotional intelligence attended by operatives of the unit.

He explained that the VCRU was created in line with a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Olatunji Disu.

“The VCRU, a brainchild of the IGP, has the core mandate of investigating, responding to, and suppressing violent crimes through strictly intelligence-driven operations,” the commissioner said.

He added that the unit would operate in full compliance with constitutional provisions, the Nigeria Police Act 2020, and applicable international human rights standards.

“The unit will remain accountable and serve as a bridge of trust between the Nigeria Police Force and the public,” Mr Giwa stated.

The former Crack Tactical Squad Base at Golf Estate, Enugu, along the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway, has been designated as the unit’s operational base. A dedicated complaints response desk has also been established.

Operatives have undergone intensive training to enhance professionalism and guide their interactions with members of the public.

“Pending the formal unveiling of the unit by the IGP, I charge operatives to remain guided by its core mandates and clearly defined standard operating procedures,” Mr Giwa said.
