England made history on Sunday night as the Lionesses overcame Spain in a dramatic penalty shootout to win the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025, becoming the first England team to secure a major international trophy on foreign soil.

The thrilling final, which ended 1-1 after extra time, saw Chloe Kelly once again step into the spotlight, converting the decisive penalty to hand England victory. It marked her second iconic contribution to European glory, having also scored the winner in the Euro 2022 final at Wembley.

Spain had taken the lead in the first half through Mariona Caldentey’s powerful header, putting the reigning world champions on course for the title. But the Lionesses, true to their reputation for resilience, refused to back down. They have now conceded first in all three knockout games of the tournament but clawed their way back each time.

England equalised after Kelly came on as a substitute for Lauren James, whose fitness had been in question before the game. Kelly’s impact was instant—her pinpoint cross found Alessia Russo, who headed home to draw level.

With no winner after 120 minutes, the match was decided on penalties. Goalkeeper Hannah Hampton emerged as a hero, saving two of Spain’s spot-kicks while another sailed wide. The pressure was on Kelly to seal it—and she delivered with ice-cold precision.

The triumph cements Sarina Wiegman’s status as one of football’s greatest managers. Having now won three consecutive European titles—two with England and one with the Netherlands—she continues to set a benchmark for excellence in international women’s football.

In another historic feat, the Lionesses became the first team to win a one-legged Euro final after trailing at half-time, underlining their remarkable grit and determination.
