The Edo State Government has decried the rising cases of Lassa fever across various communities in the state, urging residents to complement the government’s efforts at containing the disease by adhering to preventive protocols against its spread.

The Edo State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akoria Obehi, while addressing journalists in Benin City, said the state has recorded a total of 138 cases and 16 deaths from the disease.

Noting that the confirmed cases were recorded in 11 local government councils in the state, the Commissioner urged residents to “take necessary precautions and comply with the guidelines to prevent the spread of this deadly disease.”

She added, “It is imperative that we work together to protect ourselves and our communities by practicing good hygiene, seeking medical attention if we experience symptoms, and avoiding contact with contaminated surfaces and infected individuals. Let us remain vigilant and proactive in the fight against Lassa fever.”

Reassuring the government’s commitment to containing the disease and protecting the health of Edo people, Prof. Obehi stated, “We are closely monitoring the situation and taking all necessary measures to prevent the spread of this disease.

“We are working around the clock to identify and isolate infected individuals, and to educate the public on the best practices to prevent the spread of Lassa fever. We have also increased our efforts to promote good hygiene and sanitation in communities, and have strengthened our response team to swiftly address any new cases.”

“The Health Ministry is also working closely with healthcare providers and other stakeholders and partners to ensure that those who are infected receive prompt and effective treatment. We are also increasing our capacity to diagnose and treat Lassa fever cases and are fully equipped to handle any eventualities,” she reassured.
