The Edo State government has approved the reopening of three schools in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area, weeks after they were shut over credible terrorist threats.

A circular issued on Friday by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Enodolomwanyi Otamere, confirmed that the decision followed a comprehensive security review by relevant agencies and stakeholders.

“Following the implementation of enhanced security measures and the deployment of additional safety mechanisms across affected communities and schools, the government is satisfied that necessary arrangements have been put in place to ensure the safety and well-being of learners, teachers, and other school personnel,” Mr Otamere said.

All public and private schools affected by the earlier closure order are to resume normal academic and administrative activities from Monday, June 15, 2026.

The permanent secretary directed school heads, proprietors and education authorities to facilitate the safe return of students and staff. He also urged continued collaboration with security agencies, community leaders and government officials to sustain a secure learning environment.

Parents and guardians were reassured that adequate security measures have been deployed across the affected schools, and were encouraged to ensure their children return to school promptly.

The initial shutdown affected Ososo Grammar School, Ososo Comprehensive High School and Makeke Secondary School, following intelligence reports warning of imminent threats to students, staff and host communities. A security memo from the State Security Service had raised concerns over an alleged plot by suspected bandits to abduct schoolchildren in parts of Edo North Senatorial District.

Security operatives reportedly intercepted communications suggesting plans to target students, and a suspect was apprehended during surveillance activities near Makeke Secondary School. Candidates sitting for the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) were permitted to write their papers under special security arrangements during the closure.

With the latest directive, normal academic activities are set to resume on Monday, following government assurances that the security situation has been brought under control.
