MINNA – A 16-year-old girl has given birth to a baby boy fathered by her grandfather, Musa Gado, a DNA test has confirmed.

The teenager became pregnant after alleged sexual abuse by the suspect, who then reportedly convinced her to terminate the pregnancy. She attempted to do so using drugs and injections, but the effort failed.

The girl eventually reported the matter to the Niger State Child Rights Protection and Enforcement Agency, where she was placed in protective custody until she delivered a baby boy in December 2025.

The agency’s Director-General, Barrister Uma Mohammed, confirmed that both mother and child remain in the agency’s care.

“The case was reported on October 5, 2025, by the girl’s father, Lawali Baba, and the local village head,” she said. “The girl arrived already six months pregnant. Medical checks were conducted, and she has remained in our custody to protect her and her unborn child.”

Ms Mohammed explained that all parties, including the alleged perpetrator, agreed to a DNA test to establish the truth. The grandfather bore the cost of N500,000 for the test, which was conducted at a hospital in Gwagwalada.

“The result confirmed a 99.999 per cent probability that the grandfather is the father of the baby,” she said. The case has since been forwarded to the police, and the suspect is in custody at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) pending prosecution.

Olasukanmi Kalejaiye, Project Director of Global Promoters for Community Initiatives – a civil society organisation implementing the SCAPAGBV 3.0 programme supported by the Nigeria Women Trust Fund – vowed to ensure the suspect faces the full weight of the law.

“We commend the state government and the Child Rights Agency for their work. We will ensure the suspect is prosecuted accordingly,” he said.

The Niger State Police Command spokesperson, Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the arrest of Musa Gado, adding that the investigation is ongoing.

“The case was reported, a DNA test conducted, and the Child Rights Agency is handling the matter. The police are investigating and will prosecute the suspect,” Mr Abiodun said.
