The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Kirikiri Lighter Terminal (KLT) Command, has intercepted a 40-foot container laden with expired disposable vape products valued at N809.6 million in duty-paid value.

Acting Customs Area Controller, Bolaji Adigun, announced the seizure during a media briefing at the command, as disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday.

Adigun revealed that the container, bearing registration number TIIU4739360, was flagged during a detailed cargo examination by command officers.

The interception coincides with a notable revenue increase for June 2026, with the KLT Command generating N19.4 billion—a 35 per cent rise from N14.3 billion recorded in June 2025, reflecting an additional N5.041 billion.

“In furtherance of this mandate, officers of the command, through diligent cargo examination, intercepted a 40-foot container containing expired disposable vape with a total duty-paid value of N809.6 million,” Adigun stated.

Physical inspection uncovered 18 pallets of disposable vape products, with each pallet containing 60 cartons. The cartons held either 20 or 40 packs, each containing ten vape devices—amounting to 484 cartons and 182,340 individual pieces.

“Further examination established that the products had different expiry dates of 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, and 2026, respectively, rendering them unfit for use and posing a potential risk to public health,” he added.

Adigun confirmed that the command has initiated the transfer of the seized goods to the appropriate government agency for regulatory action and safe disposal in line with established procedures.

He attributed the improved performance to officer commitment, stronger stakeholder compliance, enhanced trade facilitation measures, and intelligence-led enforcement operations.

The Acting Area Controller reaffirmed the command’s focus on revenue generation, trade facilitation, and enforcement, emphasising that the seizure demonstrated the vigilance and professionalism of its personnel in preventing unsafe and non-compliant goods from entering the Nigerian market.

He urged importers, licensed customs agents, and other stakeholders to comply fully with import regulations and encouraged adoption of the NCS’s Authorised Economic Operator Programme and Advance Ruling System to improve compliance, facilitate trade, and enhance procedural predictability.

Adigun assured stakeholders that the command would strengthen intelligence gathering, risk management, and cargo inspection to detect expired, falsely declared, prohibited, and other non-compliant imports while supporting economic growth, public health, and national security.

He expressed appreciation to Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, and the Customs management team for their leadership and strategic direction.

The Acting Controller also commended officers for their dedication and thanked licensed customs agents, terminal operators, importers, compliant stakeholders, and partner government agencies for their continued cooperation in protecting the nation’s economy, securing its borders, and safeguarding public health.
