President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially conferred the distinguished national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) on Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah. The award which was officially announced during the Democracy Day celebrations on 12 June 2025, a date that commemorates Nigeria enduring struggle for democracy and freedom
The recognition is seen as a major milestone, not just for Bishop Kukah, but for the many Nigerians who have benefitted from his leadership, outspokenness, and tireless efforts towards nation-building. Bishop Kukah commitment to fairness and unity has positioned him as a respected voice in both religious and civic discourse throughout Nigeria.
The Retired Brigadier General Simon Katunku Gora, has commended President Tinubu for his timely and commendable decision to recognise Bishop Kukah with such a prestigious national award. In a heartfelt congratulatory statement, Gen. Gora expressed sincere appreciation to President Tinubu, stating that Bishop Kukah award reflects a recognition of “an outstanding personality who embodies integrity and purpose.”
Gen. Gora further noted that the honour bestowed on Bishop Kukah is particularly significant to the people of Kaduna, Nigeria and the world at large, who view the Bishop as a symbol of unity, peace, and strength.
“Your recognition is a true reflection of your leadership one rooted in integrity, justice, and a deep concern for national growth,” General Gora said.
According to Gen. Gora, Bishop Kukah Award recognition was both timely and well-deserved. He described Bishop Kukah as “a kind and visionary leader” whose voice has consistently echoed the concerns of ordinary Nigerians, regardless of social or political pressure.
His fearless advocate for democracy, equality and his dedication to speak out against injustice, promoting interfaith dialogue and contributions to Nigeria progress cannot be overstated. His leadership has not only been spiritual but deeply civic, bridging religious divides and pushing for policies that promote peace and progress.
“Bishop Kukah recognition with the CON title solidifies his place in the national consciousness as a true statesman and moral leader” Gen. Gora affirmed.
The Retired General also urged Nigerians especially the younger generation to follow in Bishop Kukah footsteps. He called on the citizens to adopt similar values of honesty, unity, and service to the nation, stressing that such virtues are essential for Nigeria long-term development.
“If more leaders and citizens exemplify the values that Bishop Kukah lives by, our country would prosper both now and in the generations to come,” Gen. Gora stated.
Lastly, Gen. Gora called on Nigerians to look beyond political, ethnic, and religious lines and instead focus on building a shared future founded on mutual respect and national pride. Gen. Gora also encouraged the residents of Kaduna state to reject all forms of division and stand together in solidarity for the betterment of their communities.
“Peace is paramount,” he said. “The only way forward is through unity, regardless of tribe, religion, or political belief. The honour given to Bishop Kukah is a reflection of what Kaduna people can achieve when they are united in purpose.”
