Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra has cautioned developers against using substandard materials in the construction of buildings.

Governor Soludo, who was represented by his Deputy, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim, gave the warning on Thursday, when he visited the site of a collapsed three-storey building under construction in Awka, the Anambra capital.

He said the use of substandard materials remained the major cause of frequent cases of building collapse in the country.

“There is need to stop the use of substandard materials in the construction of buildings to prevent collapse.

“Building collapse endangers lives and also wastes materials,” the governor said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the collapsed building under construction along the Enugu-Onitsha expressway, was at roofing stage before the unfortunate incident but no life was lost.

The governor, however, warned builders against throwing caution to the wind, when erecting structures and to avoid actions that could endanger human lives.

When contacted on phone, the engineer handling the project, who gave his name as just Mr Stanley, said he was trapped in the building alongside two other workers but were later rescued.

He said they were taken to the hospital, where they are receiving treatment. (NAN)
