Yan Yuqing, China’s Consul General in Lagos, announced that bilateral trade between China and Nigeria reached an impressive $15.48 billion from January to July 2025.

This announcement was made during a reception held on Sunday, which celebrated three significant events: the 76th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Nigeria’s 64th independence anniversary, and the Mid-Autumn Festival.

Ms. Yuqing highlighted that this figure marks a substantial 34.7 percent increase compared to the same period in 2024, underscoring the strengthening of relations between the two nations. She noted that Nigeria now stands as China’s second-largest trading partner in Africa.

The Consul General attributed the advancement of the bilateral relationship to the establishment of a comprehensive strategic partnership during the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation summit, which has opened up new avenues for collaboration.

She elaborated on the deepening partnerships in various sectors, including infrastructure, energy, trade, culture, and education, which have been yielding significant benefits for the citizens of both countries.

“Guided by mutual respect and benefit, the all-encompassing cooperation between China and Nigeria has produced remarkable outcomes. In the first half of 2025, our bilateral trade reached $15.483 billion, reflecting a 34.7 percent year-on-year growth, solidifying Nigeria’s position as China’s second-largest trading partner in Africa,” Ms. Yuqing stated.

She also emphasized that cooperation in infrastructure, investment, energy resources, culture, and education continues to thrive, providing tangible benefits for both nations.

Amidst global economic challenges, Ms. Yuqing noted that China’s economy has shown resilience, achieving a GDP growth of 5.3 percent in the first half of 2025 while maintaining its status as a global leader in innovation.

She commended the Chinese community in Nigeria for their contributions to cultural exchanges, local development, and charitable endeavors, encouraging them to serve as bridge-builders in enhancing China-Nigeria relations.

The Consul General assured that the Consulate would persist in safeguarding the welfare and interests of Chinese nationals in Nigeria while fostering bilateral cooperation.

“Currently, China-Nigeria relations are at their historical peak, with immense prospects for collaboration. I encourage everyone to act as ‘bridge-builders’ in fortifying China-Nigeria friendship and to be guardians of a harmonious overseas Chinese community. Let’s uphold the spirit of unity and mutual support to cultivate an inclusive and warm atmosphere for the Chinese community in Nigeria.”

She urged the community to be proactive in promoting national unity and to lead in maintaining safe and lawful business practices, positioning themselves as a vital force in driving cooperative development between China and Nigeria.

Furthermore, Ms. Yuqing reiterated the Consulate’s commitment to people-focused diplomacy, addressing the urgent needs faced by Chinese nationals and enterprises within the consular district.

“We are dedicated to providing high-quality, efficient services and support to aid your work and daily lives,” she concluded.
