China has delivered the first full-cycle cassava mechanisation equipment to Nigeria, marking a significant step in agricultural modernisation and food security cooperation between both nations.

The consignment, comprising four specialised machines, arrived on June 17 and was handed over to the National Root Crops Research Institute (NRCRI) in Umudike, Abia State. The equipment includes a deep plough, rotary tiller, combined ridging and cassava planter, and a vibrating-chain cassava harvester, designed to cover the entire production chain—from land preparation and planting to harvesting.

According to a statement by the Chinese Embassy in Abuja, the machinery is expected to substantially reduce manual labour, increase field efficiency, and make cassava farming more scalable, standardised, and profitable for Nigerian farmers.

The initiative stems from a long-standing partnership between the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences and the NRCRI, supported by the Hainan Provincial International Science and Technology Cooperation Project. Both institutions have collaborated on cassava germplasm innovation, sustainable practices, and capacity building, with plans to establish a China-Nigeria Joint Laboratory on Cassava for localised research and development.

This delivery is a key outcome of the Africa Cassava Yield Doubling Initiative (ACYDI), launched by the Chinese Academy in 2023 under the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation Beijing Action Plan (2025–2027). The programme integrates improved seed varieties, mechanisation, advanced techniques, and farmer training to boost productivity across the continent.

The partnership underscores deepening China-Africa agricultural cooperation and aligns with Nigeria’s broader strategy to modernise farming systems and enhance food security.
