The Taraba State chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has threatened to stage a protest over the prolonged delay in repairing the Namnai Bridge in Gassol Local Government Area.

The bridge, which is critical to transportation and economic activity in the state, collapsed in August 2024 following torrential rainfall. In a statement on Monday, NANS chairman Bolyo Saleh described the situation as “disheartening”, noting that no visible progress had been made despite the bridge’s strategic importance to residents, commuters and particularly students.

The association warned that the absence of the bridge continues to pose serious safety risks, disrupt academic activities and hinder socio-economic development in communities that rely heavily on the route.

NANS also criticised the lack of interim solutions, pointing out that no local or temporary measures had been put in place to ease the hardship faced by road users. It insisted that the continued neglect had left many exposed to danger and unnecessary difficulties.

The students’ body called on the North East Development Commission (NEDC), contractors and other relevant government agencies to provide clear explanations regarding the delay. It sought clarification on whether funds had been allocated for the project and how such funds had been utilised, as well as the reasons for the absence of alternative arrangements.

Furthermore, NANS demanded a definite timeline for the commencement and completion of the bridge repairs, stressing that the ongoing situation reflects a lack of commitment to the welfare of the people, especially students.

“The Taraba State Axis of NANS will not remain silent while the safety and future of our students are put at risk,” the statement read. It warned that failure to address the concerns promptly could lead to lawful and decisive action by the association.
