Manchester United have confirmed that Michael Carrick will remain as head coach of the men’s first team, after the interim boss secured a new contract running until 2028.

The 44-year-old was initially appointed as interim manager until the end of the season, following Ruben Amorim’s sacking in January amid a poor run of results. However, Carrick has since revitalised the club, guiding United to 11 wins in 16 Premier League matches. The team finished third and qualified for the UEFA Champions League.

In a statement released on Friday, the club said: “Manchester United is delighted to announce that Michael Carrick will continue as head coach… having signed a new contract which will run to 2028.”

The former midfielder was named Premier League Manager of the Month after securing victories over Manchester City and Arsenal in his first two matches in charge.

Reacting to his appointment, Carrick said: “From the moment that I arrived here 20 years ago, I felt the magic of Manchester United. Carrying the responsibility of leading our special football club fills me with immense pride.

“Throughout the past five months, this group of players have shown they can reach the standards of resilience, togetherness and determination that we demand here. Now it’s time to move forward together again, with ambition and a clear sense of purpose. Manchester United and our incredible supporters deserve to be challenging for the biggest honours again.”
