In a revealing interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Prof Ibrahim Gambari, the Chief of Staff to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, firmly dismissed claims that Buhari was replaced by a lookalike known as ‘Jubril of Sudan’. Gambari, who worked alongside Buhari in 1984, expressed unwavering confidence that the leader he knew then was the same person until his passing.

Gambari stated, “I’m sorry to disappoint. I had no doubt at all that the Buhari I knew in 1984 was the same until his death. It’s quite silly to suggest he was a different person.” He elaborated on the unfounded nature of such rumours, attributing them to a tendency among some Nigerians to believe the worst about their leaders.

During the interview, Gambari recalled the conversations he had with Buhari when he was offered the position, noting, “He was talking to me about the things we did in 1984 and 1985 in great detail. He was reminiscing about the loyalty I showed him.” This recollection further underscores Gambari’s belief in Buhari’s consistent character and leadership.

The ‘Jubril of Sudan’ conspiracy theory has circulated among certain groups in Nigeria, suggesting that the former president was replaced by a double. Gambari’s staunch denial serves to quell these baseless claims and reinforce the authenticity of the late president’s leadership.

As discussions surrounding Buhari’s legacy continue, Gambari’s insights provide a personal perspective on the man behind the presidency. His unwavering support highlights the complexities of Nigerian political discourse, where speculation can often overshadow factual narratives.

In conclusion, Prof Gambari’s assurances serve as a reminder to approach such claims with scepticism and rely on the experiences of those who were closest to the former president. As Nigeria navigates its political landscape, understanding the true nature of its leaders remains crucial for informed public discourse.
