Nigeria’s Super Eagles delivered an impressive performance, defeating Algeria 2-0 in a gripping quarter-final match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Saturday evening in Marrakech. This victory sets up a much-anticipated semi-final clash against the tournament hosts, Morocco.

The Super Eagles showcased clinical finishing and solid defence, leaving Algeria’s Desert Warriors searching for answers throughout the match.

The first half saw both teams vying for dominance, with Nigeria creating several threatening opportunities. However, it was in the second half that the Super Eagles truly took flight. Just two minutes after the restart, star striker Victor Osimhen broke the deadlock in the 47th minute, powering in a header from close range, assisted by Bruno Onyemaechi.

Nigeria continued to press their advantage, quickly doubling their lead. In the 57th minute, Akor Adams took full advantage of a swift counter-attack, expertly placing a left-footed shot into the net to make it 2-0, with Osimhen providing the assist.

Despite making several substitutions, including the introduction of Baghdad Bounedjah and Anis Hadj Moussa, Algeria struggled to penetrate Nigeria’s well-organised defence. Attempts from Ramy Bensebaini and Baghdad Bounedjah either went wide or were blocked by a disciplined Nigerian backline and vigilant goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.

The Super Eagles managed the game effectively in the closing stages, making tactical substitutions to maintain their lead. Despite a late surge of attempts from Algeria, Nigeria held firm to secure a thoroughly deserved victory.
