Former vice president and the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress for the 2027 general elections, Atiku Abubakar, has congratulated Morocco on its qualification for the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing the achievement as a proud moment for Africa.

Peoples Daily Online reports that Morocco became the first African nation to reach the last eight of the 2026 tournament after a commanding 3-0 victory over Canada, a feat that has attracted widespread praise across the continent.

Reacting in a post on his verified X handle on Sunday, Atiku hailed the Atlas Lions for their impressive performance, saying the victory had once again raised Africa’s profile on the global football stage.

His reaction read, “Congratulations to Morocco on a deserved 3-0 victory over Canada and on becoming the first African team to reach the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“You have once again lifted the hopes of an entire continent and reminded the world that African football belongs on the biggest stage.”

Morocco’s latest feat adds to the country’s growing reputation as one of Africa’s football powerhouses.

Recall that the North African side already etched its name in history at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar by becoming the first African and Arab nation to reach the semi-finals of the tournament.

The achievement has drawn commendations from football fans, sports administrators and political leaders across Africa, who have described the victory as another significant milestone for African football.
