The Anambra State Government has introduced a comprehensive plea bargain initiative for criminal defendants, excluding cases of murder, kidnapping, armed robbery, and rape, in a bid to decongest correctional facilities and streamline judicial processes.

Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Tobechukwu Nweke (SAN), announced the policy in a statement on Wednesday, describing it as a strategic reform aligned with Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s vision for a more efficient criminal justice system.

Under the directive, which takes immediate effect, all state prosecutors have been instructed to provide prescribed plea bargain forms to defendants before a plea is entered. The arrangement applies to all offences established under Anambra State laws, with the exception of the four most serious violent crimes.

“This marks the first time a state government has extended the plea bargain option on such an expansive scale to individuals facing criminal prosecution,” Mr Nweke stated.

Under the framework, defendants who voluntarily plead guilty to an eligible offence may receive a reduced sentence at the court’s discretion, potentially easing pressure on overcrowded correctional centres and accelerating case resolution.

The initiative represents a significant policy shift in the state’s criminal justice administration, reinforcing ongoing reforms while maintaining strict exclusions for offences involving grave violence against persons.
