The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has disclosed that Aero Contractors refunded over N257 million to passengers affected by flight delays, cancellations, and baggage issues from January to August 2025. This amount marks a remarkable 137% increase compared to N108 million refunded during the same period in 2024, indicating significant progress in the airline’s compliance with consumer protection regulations.

In an official statement, the NCAA praised Aero Contractors for its dedication to upholding passenger rights, noting that the refunds reflect enhanced adherence to Part 19 of the NCAA Regulations 2023. Additionally, the authority revealed that the airline allocated over N6 million for hotel accommodations for stranded passengers between January and July 2025.

The NCAA provided comprehensive figures: “Total refunds issued from January to August 2025 amounted to N257,195,724.39, in contrast to N108,308,037.40 during the same timeframe in 2024 and N32,766,652.30 in 2023.”

Regarding hotel expenditures, the NCAA stated: “For hotel accommodations, the total reported from January to July 2025 is N6,083,229, with verified records from Cocos Hotel, Grand Cubana Hotel in Abuja, NOCY Castle Hotel, Kim Royal Hotel, JC42 Apartment in Asaba, and Mayor & Diplomat Hotel in Lagos.”

While acknowledging the difficult operating conditions faced by airlines, the NCAA reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the rights of passengers and other stakeholders. “These figures indicate a notable improvement in compliance with Part 19 of the NCAA Regulations 2023,” the authority noted.

Although the rise in refunds may suggest an increase in flight disruptions, it also highlights stricter enforcement of passenger compensation regulations and a growing awareness among travelers of their rights. The NCAA’s public disclosure of these statistics is part of a broader initiative to foster transparency and accountability within the aviation industry.

Aero Contractors has not yet commented on whether the uptick in refunds is attributable to operational challenges or enhanced handling of passenger complaints. However, the NCAA’s acknowledgment implies that the airline is becoming more responsive to customer claims.

The aviation sector has faced numerous challenges in recent years, including fuel shortages, currency fluctuations, and infrastructure limitations, all of which have contributed to delays and cancellations. The NCAA’s data indicates that Aero Contractors is meeting its financial responsibilities to affected passengers despite these obstacles.

This report could serve as a catalyst for other airlines to enhance their customer service and compliance with refund policies, helping them avoid regulatory penalties and reputational harm.

Passenger rights advocacy groups have frequently criticized Nigerian airlines for inadequate handling of compensation claims. The latest NCAA report on Aero Contractors may establish a new benchmark for industry compliance and consumer protection.

The authority remains vigilant in monitoring all domestic airlines to ensure adherence to regulations designed to protect passenger interests and sustain trust in the aviation sector.
