Organised labour in Taraba State, comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), has announced plans to embark on an indefinite strike beginning at midnight on Monday, August 11, 2025.
Our correspondent observed that state secretariat and other government offices are locked following the industrial action alleging irregularities in the operations of the state’s Biometric Data Capture Committee, which labour leaders claim have unjustly affected civil servants and remain unresolved despite repeated engagements with the government.
In a joint statement, NLC Chairman Peter Jediel and TUC Chairman Sule Abasu said the decision was reached during a Joint State Administrative Council meeting on August 6.
The unions accused the committee of engaging in illegal practices and faulted the state government for failing to respond to previous ultimatums. They stressed that the strike was necessary to protect workers’ rights and restore fairness in the verification process.
According to the unions, mobilisation for the action will begin immediately. Affiliate unions, civil society groups, and stakeholders have been directed to establish strike implementation committees across all ministries, departments, and agencies to ensure full compliance. Residents have also been urged to make necessary preparations for the disruption that will follow.
The strike, which is scheduled to commence at midnight on August 11, will continue indefinitely until the government addresses the grievances raised by the labour movement.
