In a bizarre incident that took place on November 23, 2024, in Kuchibuyi Village, a local herbalist’s misguided experiment with a self-made ‘bulletproof’ charm landed him in the hospital, prompting an immediate response from the FCT Police Command.

According to spokesperson SP Josephine Adeh, a distress call was received from a resident named Shandam Michael, reporting that Ismail Usman, the herbalist in question, had accidentally shot himself in the stomach while testing the efficacy of his charm.

“The unfortunate event unfolded when Usman, in a reckless attempt to validate his homemade charm, shot himself with a shotgun,” SP Adeh stated. “The charm did not provide the protection he anticipated, leading to life-threatening injuries.”

Police responders from the Byazhin Division arrived quickly at the scene, where they found Usman in critical condition. He was immediately rushed to Kubwa General Hospital for urgent medical attention before being transferred to Gwagwalada Specialist Hospital for more comprehensive care.

In the wake of the incident, law enforcement officials executed a search of Usman’s residence, recovering the homemade firearm along with various charms associated with his dangerous experiment.

Ongoing investigations are focused on potential charges against Usman for unlawful possession of firearms and attempted suicide under Section 231 of the Penal Code Law of Northern Nigeria.

Commissioner of Police FCT, CP Olatunji Disu, expressed his disapproval of the incident, emphasizing the inherent dangers of illegal firearms and reckless behavior. “This situation highlights the severe risks involved in engaging in such hazardous practices. We strongly advise the community to refrain from similar actions,” he remarked.

The police also urged community members to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activities. “It is vital for residents to look out for one another to maintain safety within our neighborhoods,” SP Adeh added. “As investigations proceed, we are dedicated to ensuring the security of all residents in the area.”
