The Association of the National Institute (AANI) has mourned the death of one of its founding members, Lieutenant General Jeremiah Timbut Useni (rtd) CFR mni, describing his life and service as a beacon of patriotism, integrity, and dedication to national development.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Brigadier General SK Usman, AANI highlighted the late Useni’s remarkable contributions to Nigeria’s progress through his illustrious military and public service career.
“His service as Minister of Transport, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Quarter-Master General of the Nigerian Army, Military Governor of the old Bendel State, and Member of the defunct Armed Forces Ruling Council demonstrated his steadfast commitment to national development, peace, and security,” the statement read.
Lieutenant General Useni passed away on January 23, 2025, at the age of 82 in Paris. AANI expressed its profound grief, noting that his demise is a significant loss to his family, Plateau State, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and the nation at large.
The statement reads in part:”AANI President, Ambassador Emmanuel Obi Okafor mni, on behalf of the National Executive Council and members of the association, praised General Useni’s transformative leadership as AANI’s President from 1994 to 1999.
“His tenure saw the establishment of the association’s National Secretariat in Maitama, Abuja, which remains a cornerstone of AANI’s legacy.
“General Useni’s contributions to peace, unity, and harmonious coexistence earned him respect and admiration. His advocacy for progress and his passion for Plateau State and Nigeria have left an indelible mark,” the statement added.
The late General, a former Senator representing Plateau South Senatorial District and a Monitor General of the Senior Executive Course 3, 1981, was celebrated for his unwavering dedication to national welfare.
” AANI recalled the joy of commemorating his 81st birthday last year, a testament to his warmth and wisdom.
“As AANI joins the nation in mourning, the association extended heartfelt condolences to his family, the people of Plateau State, and the entire Nigerian military.
“May the Almighty God grant his family strength in this difficult time and bless his soul with eternal rest. His towering legacy will inspire generations to serve with honor, dedication, and patriotism,” the statement concluded.
