Several explosions shook Caracas early on Saturday, with a CNN team reporting that parts of the Venezuelan capital have been disconnected from the electricity supply.

The first blast was recorded at approximately 1:50 am local time, according to the network.

“One was so powerful that my window was rattling afterwards,” stated Osmary Hernandez, a CNN correspondent.

Numerous neighbourhoods experienced power outages, and aircraft could be heard overhead following the explosions.

The cause of the explosions remains unclear at this time.

A video obtained and verified by CNN depicted two plumes of smoke rising into the night sky, accompanied by flickering city lights. An orange glow was visible at the base of one plume before a flash and a muffled booming sound resonated in the distance.

Venezuelan news outlets Efecto Cocuyo and Tal Cual Digital reported that explosions were also audible in La Guaira state, north of Caracas, along the coast, as well as in Higuerote, a coastal town in Miranda state.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly warned that the United States is preparing to take further action against alleged drug trafficking networks in Venezuela, stating that land strikes would commence soon.

In October, Trump announced that he had authorised the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to operate within Venezuela to combat the illegal flow of migrants and drugs from the South American nation.
