The Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC) has named a street in Asokoro after businessman and philanthropist, Chief Dr. Sam Maduka Onishi, in recognition of his contributions to national development.

The street, now officially designated Sam Maduka Onishi Street, is located beside the AA Rano Filling Station, Asokoro.

The unveiling ceremony was supervised by the Department of Street Naming under AMMC.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Charles Adikwu, from the department of Street Naming, Abuja Metropolitan Management Council, said the honour demonstrates the FCT Administration’s commitment to recognising individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the country.

“Chief Dr. Sam Maduka Onishi has performed well in every aspect of his life. He built his businesses from scratch and has become one of the highest employers of labour, with over 150,000 people under his companies,” Adikwu said.

Onishi is the founder of Peace Mass Transit, Chairman of Globus Bank, owner of Peace Microfinance Bank, Peace Oil & Gas, Peace Island Gas, and Chancellor of Sam Maduka University, Akwegbo, Enugu State.

Adikwu noted that naming streets after notable achievers also strengthens community identity and enhances security management.

“If anything happens, it is now easy to identify the exact location. Before now, people kept describing addresses and crimes could go unnoticed,” he said.

Also speaking, the Regional Manager of Peace Mass Transit (Northern Region), Mr. Ngwu Jude Chinweike, described the recognition as well deserved, noting that government has increasingly honoured individuals who have positively impacted society.

“We are delighted to see that my boss, Chief Dr. Sam Maduka Onishi, is one of the beneficiaries. It sends a message that once you contribute to society, the government recognises you,” he said.

He added that the company is committed to supporting further development along the street.

“Because the street is named after our chairman, we will keep our eyes here and contribute to making the environment better,” he said.

The newly named street is expected to boost area identity and encourage more private-led development.
