The Abuja Environmental Waste, Scrap and Scavengers Association has praised President Bola Tinubu for what it described as his inclusive style of governance and the establishment of the APC Progressive Institute.

The association’s chairman, Muntari Mohammed, spoke during a courtesy visit to the Director-General of the institute, Dr Lanre Adebayo, in Abuja.

Mohammed said the institute was timely, stressing that its existence would help enlighten citizens on the achievements of the Renewed Hope Agenda. He noted that many members of the association were loyal APC supporters who backed Tinubu in the 2023 elections.

He, however, alleged that despite their support, members continued to face harassment from FCT enforcement bodies, including Development Control, the Abuja Environmental Protection Board, task forces and the Police.

Mohammed appealed to the institute to intervene so authorities could understand that his members were “patriotic Nigerians doing legitimate business.”

Responding, Adebayo welcomed the visit and urged the association to create a code of operation for its members. He said such a framework would enable the institute to provide training that would also involve FCT enforcement agencies for proper engagement.

He cited examples from Lagos, where foreign partners support scrap dealers to turn waste into profitable ventures, saying similar opportunities could emerge in the FCT.

The DG encouraged the association to continue supporting the Tinubu administration, stressing the need for self-reliance and skill development.

Members of the delegation included Lawal Aliyu, chairman of the UTC chapter; Sarki Abbas; Muhammad Abdul Fata; and Sani Katsina. Aliyu said the group remained committed to the APC, insisting it was the platform that defended their rights.

Adebayo concluded that the institute would collaborate with the association to improve members’ skills through training seminars.
