Political tension is brewing in Kogi State as Deputy Governor, Comrade Joel Salifu, and Senator representing Kogi West, Sunday Karimi, exchange words over who controls the political structure of Kogi East (Igala axis) ahead of the 2027 general election.
Speaking at the Kabba Day Festival on Sunday, Salifu declared himself the voice and leader of the Igala people within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“I am an Igala by tribe and from Kogi East. By the grace of God, I am a leader of the Kogi East APC,” he said.
Salifu insisted that only Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo and himself could represent the true interest of the people of Kogi East, adding that Ododo’s eight years in office is sacrosanct.
He said all Igalas had united in support of President Bola Tinubu and Governor Ododo for continuity in governance.
However, Senator Karimi countered the deputy governor’s claim, saying political power is not handed over but taken through strategy and unity.
“We are reaching out to our people in Kogi East, and they are ready to work with us. The ball is in our court,” Karimi said.
The verbal exchange has sparked renewed debate within the APC over who truly commands influence in Kogi East as the 2027 polls draw nearer.
