Wike Warns PDP Leadership: Convention at Risk Without Changes

Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has suggested that the upcoming Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national convention may face postponement if internal conflicts are not adequately resolved. The party has scheduled its national convention to be held in Ibadan, Oyo State, this November.

However, speaking during his monthly media chat in Abuja on Monday, Wike clarified that the primary concern is not the location but the unresolved issues within the party. “The issue of the National convention is not the problem, the issue is the problems leading to the convention and people should understand that,” he stated.

Wike emphasised that his comments had been misrepresented, dismissing claims that his disagreement with Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, was the reason for his stance. “Instead of you to report what we have said accurately, some people say because I’m quarreling with Seyi that is why I said the convention will not hold in Ibadan. The venue is not the subject matter,” he explained.

He reiterated that the convention’s success depends on whether the party leadership has addressed necessary preparatory matters. “What we are saying is that the things leading to the convention if they are not well taken care of, there are likelihood that the convention will not hold,” Wike noted. He confirmed that the PDP has taken steps to resolve the issues, particularly concerning the Southeast and Ebonyi State, but warned that failure to satisfactorily address grievances could lead to significant setbacks for the party.
