In a dramatic political development in Akwa Ibom, three commissioners have resigned after Governor Umo Eno’s switch from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Among the 26 members of the state House of Assembly, 15 lawmakers have opted to remain with the PDP, while 11 have joined Eno in the APC.

The commissioners who have resigned are Engr. Eno Ibanga (Works), Ini Ememobong (Special Duties and Ibom Deepsea), and Emem Almond Bob (Finance).

Governor Eno made the announcement of his defection at a ceremony at the Banquet Hall of the Akwa Ibom Government House, Uyo, attended by the Chairman of the APC Governors Forum, Hope Uzodinma, and Prince Bassey Otu of Cross River State, along with Unoma Ekaette Akpabio, the Senate President’s wife.

Following the event, Eno registered as a member of the APC at Obotim ward in Nsit Ubium local government area, completing the formalities of his departure from the PDP.

Commissioner Ini Ememobong, after witnessing the defection ceremony, submitted his resignation to the State Executive Council. In a letter shared on Facebook, he stated that he was resigning in line with Eno’s directive for appointees unwilling to join the APC.

He expressed: “Today, I have tendered my resignation to the Governor in compliance with his directive that his appointees unwilling to join him on the political journey to the APC should resign. While I respect the Governor’s decision, I cannot partake in that journey.

“My decision is based on my commitment to principled politics and my long-standing opposition to that political platform, a view supported by many Nigerians across various sectors. This decision does not affect my personal relationship with the Governor, who regards me as a brother and trusted me with two important ministries.

“I look back on my political and public service history with satisfaction, leaving ultimate judgement to history. Given another opportunity, I would achieve even more.

“I extend my heartfelt gratitude to His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno, for appointing me to his cabinet, and special thanks to Mr. Udom Emmanuel, the former Governor, for his enduring support.

“I acknowledge that this decision may not be pleasing to everyone, and I ask for your understanding. While the future is uncertain, I trust that ultimately all things will work together for good for those who love the Lord and are called to His purpose.”
