Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has formally announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking at a press conference in Uyo on Friday, Governor Eno said the decision followed wide consultations across the state and was aimed at aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s economic agenda.

“Having completed the rounds of my consultations as your servant, I have therefore decided to progressively move to the All Progressives Congress (APC),” he declared.

Governor Eno stressed that the move was not driven by political desperation, but by a strong desire to contribute meaningfully to national development.

“We are not joining the APC from a position of weakness,” he asserted. “We are joining the APC from a position of strength — to support President Tinubu’s bold economic reforms.”

The defection marks a significant shift in the political dynamics of the South-South region and adds to the growing list of PDP governors crossing over to the APC.

Just six weeks earlier, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori also switched allegiance, highlighting growing divisions within the main opposition party.

The APC is expected to officially welcome Governor Eno at a major ceremony in Abuja in the coming days.

Political observers suggest the move could alter the balance of power in Akwa Ibom and further strengthen the APC’s presence in the oil-rich Niger Delta region.
