At a pivotal event in Nelson Mandela Hall, Bill Gates announced that the Gates Foundation will direct a substantial portion of its $200 billion pledge over the next 20 years to support health and development initiatives across Africa. In his address, he called on African leaders to harness innovation and foster partnerships to overcome current challenges.

Gates emphasised the critical need for collaboration with governments that prioritise health and wellbeing, stating, “The majority of that funding will be dedicated to helping you tackle challenges here in Africa.” He spoke to an audience of over 12,000, including government officials, health workers, and youth leaders, highlighting the essential role of African ingenuity in driving progress.

The philanthropist underscored the importance of investing in primary healthcare, noting that such investments yield the highest returns in health outcomes. He referenced the successes of countries like Ethiopia and Rwanda, which are leveraging innovative solutions to improve health services and economic resilience.

Gates also discussed the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in healthcare, citing Rwanda’s implementation of AI-enabled tools to enhance maternal care as a leading example. His upcoming visits to Ethiopia and Nigeria will further demonstrate his commitment to supporting African nations in achieving their health and development goals.

The Gates Foundation aims to accomplish three main objectives over the next two decades: eradicate preventable deaths of mothers and infants, ensure the next generation is free from infectious diseases, and lift millions out of poverty. With a track record of saving over 80 million lives, the foundation remains dedicated to fostering sustainable development across Africa.
