ABUJA—Senators have drawn connections between the recent surge in banditry and Boko Haram activities and the upcoming 2027 elections. In a critical discussion on an urgent motion led by Senator Shuaibu Isa Lau from the PDP, Taraba North, Senators Sunday Karimi and Danjuma Goje, both from the APC, emphasised the need for the federal government to investigate these alarming trends, reminiscent of the 2015 elections.

Senator Karimi raised alarms about a troubling increase in kidnappings in his district, urging a thorough examination of the situation. He pointed out that the resurgence of Boko Haram could be linked to disgruntled elements within the military, questioning their motives.

“We cannot let political interests undermine our national security,” he warned. “The pattern of violence we are seeing is concerning.”

Senator Goje highlighted the widespread nature of the crisis, calling for in-depth inquiries into whether these violent outbreaks are politically motivated as the election nears.

Senate President Senator Godswill Akpabio expressed his sorrow over the daily casualties, urging security forces to enhance their presence and take proactive measures. The Senate has called for increased surveillance in affected regions and urged local governments to combat insecurity more effectively.
