A devastating fire incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, February 20, 2025, in Idu, the host community of Idu Industrial Area in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). A family house belonging to Alhaji Yahaya was completely razed by the uncontrollable inferno, leaving millions of naira worth of properties destroyed.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire started around 2 am and was initially thought to have originated from the kitchen. However, it quickly spread and became too intense to be quenched instantly. Neighbors who rushed to the scene were able to contain the fire, preventing it from spreading to nearby buildings.
The cause of the fire incident is still unknown, and efforts to reach Alhaji Yahaya, the head of the affected family, were unsuccessful. The community is still reeling from the shock of the incident, which has left the family without a home.
The devastating fire incident has left many questioning what could have been done to prevent it. According to community members, the presence of a Nigeria Fire Services station in the area could have potentially prevented the fire or mitigated its damage.
Chief Muhammad Bawa Makama, the traditional ruler of the community, echoed this sentiment, sympathizing with the affected family and describing the incident as,” a serious setback.” He noted that the hardship caused by the fire will be challenging to overcome, especially during these difficult times. Makama prayed for divine intervention to help the family recover from the loss.
The traditional ruler also appealed to the government to establish a fire service station in the community, which would help prevent similar incidents in the future. Furthermore, he called on the government to provide assistance to the affected family, enabling them to start anew.
In conclusion, the village head advised residents to exercise caution and vigilance in preventing fire outbreaks, emphasizing the age-old adage that “a stitch in time saves nine.”
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of fire safety measures and the need for communities to be prepared for emergencies. An investigation into the cause of the fire is expected to be conducted by the relevant authorities.
