Arewa Group Disowns Bala Mohammed Over Criticism of Tinubu’s Economic Reforms

Published

on

The Arewa Youth Leaders and Professionals Forum (AYLPF) has distanced itself from Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed over his criticism of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic reforms, labeling his actions as detrimental to the unity and progress of northern Nigeria.

Speaking during a press conference on Monday, the AYLPF National President, Abdulahi Bilal Mohammed, accused Governor Bala Mohammed of pursuing a self-serving agenda, characterizing his opposition to the reforms as a desperate attempt to protect corrupt practices that have benefited him and his associates.

“Governor Bala Mohammed’s stance is not driven by genuine concern for Nigeria’s development but reflects his disdain for national unity and the trust placed in him by the people of Bauchi State and the country at large,” Bilal Mohammed stated.

The AYLPF also took aim at former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, describing him as politically irrelevant and disconnected from the aspirations of Nigerians.

“El-Rufai’s recent utterances and actions demonstrate his detachment from the realities and priorities of the Nigerian people,” said Bilal Mohammed, adding that his alleged alliance with promoters of a third force represents an effort to undermine the interests of northern Nigeria.

The group accused El-Rufai and other third force advocates of pursuing divisive and selfish agendas aimed at exploiting the region for personal gain.

The Arewa group called on patriotic Nigerians to reject divisive leaders and rally behind President Tinubu’s administration, which it described as committed to the progress and development of the country.

“The voices of division and selfishness must be silenced. We urge all Nigerians to support the economic reforms of President Tinubu’s administration, which are aimed at ensuring national growth and prosperity,” the group concluded.

The statement partly reads: “Firstly, Let us begin with Governor Bala Mohammed. His recent statements and actions are a clear indication of his disdain for the unity and progress of Nigeria. His opposition to President Tinubu’s reforms is not rooted in any genuine concern for the nation, but rather, a desperate attempt to cling to the corrupt practices of the past that have benefited him and his cronies.

“His actions have proven to be another emblem of trust betrayal placed in him by the people of Bauchi State and Nigeria at large. Apparently, El-Rufai, on the other hand, is a confused man with an emaciated political career.

“His emaciated political relevance has driven him into reckless rhetoric and divisive politicking, all in a futile attempt to revive his presidential ambitions. His recent utterances and actions are a clear indication of his disconnect from the aspirations of the Nigerian people. He has become a divisive figure, attempting to pit the North against the rest of the country for his personal gain.

“Indeed, it is disheartening that leaders entrusted with the responsibility of creating unity and development have instead chosen the path of betrayal and self-interest. Their antics are a betrayal of trust, not only to the North but to the entire nation.

“They are pursuing a divide and rule strategy that is antithetical to the spirit of unity and progress that Nigeria desperately needs. Let us be clear: these leaders are not speaking for the North, they are only serving their selfish agendas.

“Nevertheless, the Arewa Youth Leaders and Professionals Forum firmly stands with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his administration’s economic reforms. These reforms, though admittedly challenging in the short term, are necessary steps to reposition Nigeria for growth, development, and progress.

“However, it is evident that those opposing these reforms are individuals who have been beneficiaries of the flawed systems of past administrations. From subsidy removal to tax reforms. President Tinubu’s policies are aimed at correcting the ills of the past, ills that have kept us bound to a cycle of corruption and underdevelopment.

“Yet, these so-called northern leaders who cry foul at the mention of change, are angry because these changes threaten their stomach infrastructure and the corrupt privileges they have enjoyed. Indeed, Governor Bala Mohammed and Mallam Nasir El-Rufai’s positions are not representative of the true voices of the North.

“The North is a region built on principles of fairness, justice, and patriotism. The North supports reforms that uplift the nation, even if they require sacrifices. Perhaps, it is time to question the motives of these so-called northern leaders. Are they truly concerned about the welfare of the masses, or are they merely seeking to protect their personal interests? Their actions suggest the latter.

“Evidently, these leaders have chosen to exploit the challenges that come with reforms to sow discord and manipulate public sentiment. This divide-and-rule strategy is not new, but it is one that we, as Arewa youths and professionals, reject outrightly.

“Nevertheless, we acknowledge that President Tinubu’s reforms come with short-term inconveniences. Change is never easy, especially when it disrupts the norm that everyone is accustomed to. However, the long-term benefits of these reforms far outweigh the temporary discomfort“.

Natasha’s alleged sexual harassment against Akpabio is grave and must be investigated – Atiku

Published

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called for a thorough investigation into the allegations of sexual harassment, intimidation, and mistreatment leveled against Senate President Godswill Akpabio by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

Atiku in a post on his X handle on Friday, emphasized that the allegations are grave and deserve a credible, transparent, and independent investigation, noting that the Nigerian Senate represents the voice of the people and its leadership must uphold the highest standards of integrity, dignity, and respect.

He said: “Like millions of Nigerians, I watched with deep concern this morning as Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan raised serious allegations of sexual harassment, intimidation, and mistreatment against the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.

“These allegations are grave and deserve a thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation.

“The Nigerian Senate represents the voice of the people. Those who serve in it — especially its leadership — must uphold the highest standards of integrity, dignity, and respect, both for their office and for the Nigerian citizens they serve.

“As the third most powerful figure in the country, the Senate President should embody unimpeachable character.

“Sexual harassment in the workplace is a significant barrier to women’s advancement and, by extension, the nation’s progress. Allegations of such misconduct should never be simply dismissed, particularly when they involve a public officer with immense power, influence, and responsibility.

“As the chief presiding officer of the Upper Chamber, the Senate President has a duty to champion the protection and empowerment of Nigerian women through legislation — not to be the subject of allegations that undermine those very principles.

“The handling of this matter will send a strong message about Nigeria’s commitment to justice, accountability, and the inclusion of women in governance”.

Atiku, therefore, urged President Bola Tinubu and the Senate to take the allegations seriously, ensuring that the investigation is impartial and transparent.

He stressed that the handling of this matter will send a strong message about Nigeria’s commitment to justice, accountability, and the inclusion of women in governance.

With only four women currently serving in the Senate, Atiku believed it is imperative to foster an environment where female legislators can serve without fear of harassment or intimidation.

Trump, Zelensky clash in Oval office shouting match

Published

on

US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky clashed in an extraordinary shouting match in the Oval Office Friday, leaving efforts to end the war with Russia hanging in the balance.

“You’re either going to make a deal or we’re out,” a furious Trump told Zelensky, as a meeting that was meant to ease tensions over the sudden US outreach to Russia ended up inflaming them.

“You’re gambling with the lives of millions of people. You’re gambling with World War Three, and what you’re doing is very disrespectful to this country,” Trump added.

Zelensky was at the White House to sign a deal on sharing Ukraine’s mineral riches and discuss a peace deal with Russia, despite the US president recently branding his Ukrainian counterpart a dictator.

The meeting came after a week-long diplomatic dance that has also seen the leaders of France and Britain come to the White House to persuade Trump not to abandon Kyiv.

But tempers frayed after Vice President JD Vance said that “diplomacy” was needed to end the war. Zelensky asked “what kind of diplomacy” and Vance then accused him of being “disrespectful” in the president’s office.

Tough deal’

Trump then backed up his vice president as the leaders argued about whether the US had failed to stop Putin after the 2014 annexation of Crimea, and the situation became increasingly tense.

“You’re not acting at all thankful,” said Trump.

“It’s going to be a very hard thing to do business like this,” said Trump. “It’s going to be a tough deal to make because the attitudes have to change.”

Zelensky fought his corner with Trump in a calmer voice, accusing them of “speaking loudly.”

Trump had alarmed US allies and upended Washington’s longstanding Ukraine policy two weeks ago when he spoke to Russian President Vladimir Putin and started talks on ending the three-year-old war — without Kyiv’s involvement.

Trump told reporters on Friday he had since spoken on “numerous occasions” to Putin.

The US leader has demanded a deal granting Washington preferential access to Ukraine’s rare-earth and other natural resources as the price for any continued backing — even though he has refused to commit to giving Kyiv security guarantees as part of a truce with Russia.

“We’ll be dig, dig, digging” for Ukraine’s resources, Trump said on Thursday ahead of the meeting — echoing his presidential election campaign slogan about how the United States would “drill, baby, drill” for oil.

Dictator Without Elections’

US President Donald Trump and Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky meet in the Oval Office of the White House in Washington, DC, February 28, 2025.

The clash came despite Trump recently softening his tone on Zelensky in recent days, after berating him last week as a “dictator without elections”, blaming Ukraine for Russia’s February 2022 invasion and echoing a series of Kremlin talking points about the war.

“I have a lot of respect for him,” Trump said of Zelensky on Thursday at a joint press conference with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. “We’re going to get along really well.”

Trump, a billionaire real estate tycoon, insists the minerals deal is necessary for Washington to recoup the billions of dollars it has given Ukraine in military and other aid.

Zelensky said ahead of his arrival in Washington that US and Ukrainian officials would determine the nature of security guarantees for Ukraine and the exact sums of money at stake in the accord, he said.

But Trump — who said this week he trusts Putin to “keep his word” on any ceasefire and has repeatedly expressed admiration for the authoritarian Russian leader in the past — has refused to commit on security.

Britain and France have both offered peacekeepers in the event of a deal to end the Ukraine war but say there must be a US “backstop” — including American intelligence and possibly air power.

Putin and Trump said after their February 12 phone call that they had agreed to meet personally — but they have not finalized any meeting yet.

But as tensions between Moscow and Washington eased, Russia’s assault on Ukraine continued.

Russian infantry were on Friday storming the Ukrainian border from the Russian region of Kursk, near areas of the region that were seized last summer by Ukrainian forces, Kyiv said Friday.

Dry season farming: Kaduna farmers record bumper harvests

Published

on

Farmers in Kaura local government area of Kaduna state have recorded increased harvests following a dry season farming intervention supported by Senator Sunday Marshall Katung.

Beneficiaries of the initiative, who received water pumping machines for irrigation, said the support had helped them expand their farms and improve their yields.

One of the farmers, Jonathan Luka, said he previously struggled with dry season farming due to a lack of resources but had now seen a significant improvement.

“Before, I could only harvest 10 to 15 baskets of tomatoes, but with the water pump, I have already gathered over 50 baskets—and counting,” he said.

Luka added that he had also planted sugarcane, which would provide additional income for his family.

Another beneficiary, Nathan Thomas Yashim, said he “now harvests 10 to 12 bags of pepper weekly” and had produced over 150 bags of sweet potatoes.

“We used to rely on other states for vegetables during the dry season, but now, we grow and even sell to other communities,” Yashim said, encouraging more young people to take up dry season farming.

Senator Katung, after inspecting some of the farms, said he was pleased with the results and pledged to extend the initiative to more communities.
