The leadership of the People Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos Central Senatorial District says it has begun moves to re-awaken the structure of the party and unite stakeholders in the district.
The Vice Chairman, PDP Lagos Central, Mr Hakeem Olalemi, said this in a statement on Tuesday in Lagos.
Olalemi said that the leaders had embarked on the tour of the local governments in the district, to rekindle the party’s structure, unity and to solicit support for the strengthening of the party.
According to him, the team has been holding parleys with stakeholders and paying solidarity visits to elders and leaders of the party in the district.
He said that some of these leaders included Kofoworola Bucknor, Jimi Agbaje, Niran Akinsanya, Adetokunbo Pearse, among others.
“The team will be visiting all leaders in the district and will be holding a parley with all the past candidates and aspirants of the party soon, to ensure that everyone is carried along.
“The visitation provided an avenue for the leaders and the visiting team to discuss the need for the party leaders to shield all swords and in-fighting among them.
“We want them to give members guidance and direction that will ensure grassroots firmness, arouse the interest of the existing members, and mobilisation of new members to the party.
“The team is out to also discuss the need to create a reliable source of funding that is in accordance with the constitution of the party, that will guarantee the independence and superiority of the party system,” Olalemi said.
He said that the team had held stakeholders’ meetings with leaders and members from Mainland, Apapa, Eti-Osa, and Surulere local governments, where issues affecting the party were discussed and solutions proffered.
The vice chairman said that a meeting with stakeholders in the Lagos Island Local Government was scheduled to be held soon.
According to him, issues in discussion include the process leading to the emergence of executive members of the party at the Ward and LGA levels.
Olalemi revealed that members across the local governments visited lamented the process where the election of executives would be hijacked by few leaders.
He said that this had always jeopardised the interest of other members of the party and led to grievances among members of the party.
“Members also complain about how the delegate of the party is cornered by an aspirant, at the detriment of other aspirants, which usually led to the division of the party going to an election,” Olalemi said.
He said that meetings also availed the team the opportunity to learn that there was the need for the leaders in Lagos Central to come together and unite their members across the board.
Olalemi said that the executive would organise a town hall meeting that would bring all stakeholders from every ward in the district together.
According to him, it has been affirmed that the party needs to give the people of Lagos State another platform that can form a new government.
