In a recent address, Professor John Laah of Kaduna State University’s Department of Geography expressed strong support for the proposed Federal University of Applied Sciences in Kachia, emphasising its national benefits.

Speaking on behalf of the Forum of Southern Kaduna Professors, Professor Laah praised Senator Sunday Marshall for sponsoring the bill that aims to establish this institution, while expressing hope that President Bola Tinubu will soon grant his assent.

According to Professor Laah, the selection of Kachia for the university’s site was strategic, influenced by factors such as security, existing infrastructure, and cost efficiency.

These considerations, he stressed, would enable the university to serve all Nigerians, not only the residents of Southern Kaduna.

Professor Laah explained that while Manchok was initially proposed as the location, Kachia offered a more viable option.

The presence of a robust infrastructure network and a military base enhances Kachia’s security profile, an essential feature for a federal institution. He noted that, being a more cosmopolitan area than Manchok, Kachia would better accommodate students from diverse backgrounds, fostering inclusivity and accessibility.

“We initially considered Manchok, but we decided to make use of the existing infrastructure in Kachia, which helps reduce costs and logistical obstacles. This approach doesn’t neglect Manchok but builds on what is already available in Kachia,” Professor Laah stated.

Additionally, Kachia is home to Nok University, an institution with five operational faculties. Utilising facilities already in place in Kachia aligns with the university’s goals of cost efficiency and resource optimisation, benefiting both students and the federal government.

Professor Laah emphasised that the proposed university will operate as a federal institution, open to students from across the country.

The aim, he stressed, is not to create a “Southern Kaduna” university but to establish a national centre for applied sciences that will benefit all Nigerians.

He also highlighted the region’s unique economic potential, particularly in ginger production. Kachia is known for its high-quality ginger, and the new university could spearhead research to improve crop yields and introduce modern agricultural practices.

By doing so, the institution could create numerous job opportunities and stimulate economic growth, making Kachia a centre for agricultural research and development.
