The Nigeria Police Force has made key arrests in its effort to ensure a peaceful electoral process in Edo State, detaining two suspected political thugs in a pre-election operation.

The suspects, Edwin Obanor (43) and Audu Tajudeen (41), were apprehended with illegal firearms in a swift operation aimed at curbing violence ahead of the state election.

The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, disclosed the details via the police’s official social media channels on Saturday morning.

According to Adejobi, police officers, acting on a tip-off, moved in on the suspects late Friday night.

Obanor, identified as the leader of an armed group, was arrested at Oredo Ward 4 around 9pm, while Tajudeen, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from Ugbogbo Quarters, Igara Akoko, was apprehended at a different location in Edo State.

Upon searching the suspects, police recovered three locally made, cut-to-size pistols from Obanor, and one locally made firearm from Tajudeen.

The arrests highlight the proactive measures being taken by security forces to prevent electoral violence and ensure a safe voting environment for citizens.

“These arrests are a testament to the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to maintaining law and order during this crucial electoral process,” said ACP Adejobi.

He reiterated that the police, along with other security agencies, would not tolerate any form of violence or disorder during the elections.

The suspects remain in police custody and are expected to face charges in accordance with the law.
