A Lagos State lawmaker, Mr Adebola Shabi, on Wednesday distributed back-to-school packs to over 1,000 secondary school students in the state.
Shabi, who represents Lagos Mainland 2 Constituency in the state assembly, also gave iPads to four exceptional students to support their academics.
He also announced N100,000 scholarship award to each of three outstanding students.
Shabi distributed packs and iPads at the closing of the second edition of summer classes at the Lagos City College, Yaba.
Shabi said that the gesture was in demonstration of his commitment to education development.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the week-long free summer coaching held in four designated centres in the constituency.
It was sponsored by the lawmaker.
The coaching held at the Senior Secondary School, Abule Oja; Mainland Senior High School, Onayade Fadeyi; Onike Girls Senior School, and Lagos City College, Yaba.
Shabi said: “The idea is to encourage our future leaders during long vacations and prepare them ahead of new academic sessions.
“I am passionate about these young ones, and we must commit our best to secure their future and provide them with basic learning materials for excellence.
“The coaching ended with an examination, and the best in each centre got iPad and N100,000 in scholarship,” he said
The lawmaker said that he enjoyed scholarship awards as a student.
” I am giving back now,” he said.
Shabi advised students to use phones and computers for researches and other activities that would add value to their studies.
Master Ogunyemi Imole-Ayo, a student of YABATECH Secondary School, who spoke on behalf of the students, thanked the lawmaker for programme which started in 2023.
Also, Miss Oyindamola Adeleye, an SS3 student of Queen’s College, Yaba, described the summer coaching as laudable.
“I participated in the summer coaching with every seriousness and gained a lot,” she said. (NAN)
