Unemployment remains a significant challenge in Nigeria, affecting millions of young people who face limited job opportunities and economic uncertainty. In light of the worsened unemployment crisis caused by the cost of living crisis, it is crucial for the government and other stakeholders to urgently take action and create pathways to employment for all Nigerians.

Director General of the National Directorate of Employment (NDE), Silas Ali Agara, sheds light on some of the major contributing factors to high levels of unemployment in Nigeria. One key issue is the mismatch between the skills possessed by job seekers and the demands of the labor market. Many young people lack access to quality education and vocational training opportunities that would equip them with the necessary skills for gainful employment. To tackle this issue, the government must invest in education and training programs that align with the needs of the labor market, providing young people with the tools and resources they need to succeed in the workforce.

Silas Ali Agara, the dedicated Director General of NDE, is committed to overhauling the organization’s strategies in order to create a brighter future for Nigeria’s young workforce. His mission is to harness the power of innovation to transform the lives of Nigerian youth, aligning NDE’s efforts with the Renewed Hope Agenda. This agenda aims to provide sustainable employment opportunities and foster a culture of entrepreneurship through the modernization of NDE’s four major statutory mandates in the areas of intervention with innovation.

Under the leadership of Silas Ali Agara, NDE will prioritize job creation initiatives and support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), vocational skills development (VSD) programs, small-scale enterprises (SSS), rural employment promotion (PRP), and special public works (SPW) to stimulate economic growth and create new employment opportunities. By creating a conducive business environment, promoting entrepreneurship, and providing incentives for industries to thrive, the government can generate more jobs and reduce the unemployment rate in the country. It is crucial for policymakers to implement targeted interventions that prioritize job creation and support for vulnerable populations, such as women, persons with disabilities, and rural communities.

Collaboration between the government, private sector, and civil society is essential in developing comprehensive strategies to address the unemployment crisis in Nigeria. Under the leadership of DG Silas Ali Agara, NDE will identify the root causes of unemployment and implement evidence-based solutions. Together, the management team can create a more inclusive and sustainable economy that provides opportunities for all Nigerians.

Now is the time for us to come together and prioritize the well-being and prosperity of our people. By investing in education, job creation, and skills development initiatives, we can create a brighter future for the nation. The unemployment crisis in Nigeria is a pressing issue that requires immediate attention and decisive action from all stakeholders. It is a time bomb that will explode if we do not tackle this scourge.
