The New Dawn Caucus of the 10th Assembly has released a statement urging Nigerians not to participate in the upcoming protest. The caucus, which recently concluded its 15th session dinner at Transcorp Hilton, Abuja on July 24, 2024, emphasized the importance of dialogue.
In regards to the New Minimum Wage, the Caucus commends both Chambers of the National Assembly for swiftly passing the 2024 National Minimum Wage Act. Furthermore, the Caucus appreciates the reduction in the review period for the minimum wage from 5 to 3 years.
With regards to the planned protest, the caucus advises the organizers to engage in constructive dialogue instead. While recognizing the right to peaceful protest, the Caucus appeals to Nigerians, especially the youth, to reconsider their decision and utilize dialogue as a means to address the economic challenges faced by the populace.
The Caucus also emphasizes the need for the government to address the issue of insecurity. It calls upon all security chiefs and agencies to take decisive action in curbing the prevailing insecurity across the country.
In a show of solidarity, the Honourable members of the 10th House of Assembly have demonstrated empathy by voluntarily forgoing 50 percent of their salaries for six months, considering the economic hardships faced by citizens.
The Caucus commends its members for their selflessness.
Additionally, the Caucus expresses full support and confidence in the leadership of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abass, PhD, His sound leadership and ability to unite members of the House for the greater good have been recognized and appreciated.
