A university don, Dr. Misbahu Saidu, has called on Nigerians to draw important lessons from June 12 to foster a robust democratic culture.

Speaking during the 2024 Democracy Day celebration in Gombe, Saidu emphasized the significance of June 12 in Nigeria’s democratic history.

“June 12 highlighted key aspects of how elections were conducted and showcased a move beyond regional and party biases,” said Saidu, a lecturer in the Department of History and Diplomatic Studies at Federal University of Kashere (FUK).

“Nigerians voted for Chief MKO Abiola over Bashir Tofa, even in Tofa’s home state, demonstrating a more enlightened and participatory electorate.”

Saidu stressed the importance of mass mobilization and voting for credible candidates, urging that Democracy Day be a time for reflecting on governance and its service to citizens.

Dr. Bachama Nigel, an economist at Gombe State University (GSU), echoed this sentiment, advocating for sound economic policies to alleviate poverty. “As we honor the heroes of democracy, the government must implement clear policies to improve Nigerians’ fortunes,” he said.

Caleb Ubale, former Chairman of the Nigeria Bar Association, Gombe State chapter, called on President Bola Tinubu to show greater commitment to improving the lives of Nigerians.

“People are eager to know when the hardships will end, as we currently live in a state of helplessness,” Ubale stated.

As Nigeria marks Democracy Day, these voices highlight the ongoing need for genuine democratic practices and effective governance to address the country’s challenges.
