CSO Backs Senator Ya’u, Says Recall Attempt Is A joke

Published

on

A civil Society Organisation (CSO), the National League for the Defense of Democracy and Accountability has described as a joke taken too far, the purported attempts to suspend Sen Sahabi Alhaji Ya’u’.

The CSO which took a swipe at the proponents of the alleged recall also described it as “baffling ignorance and disingenuous”, the reasons adduced by the promoters and called on them to desist forthwith.

In a statement signed by the President of the organisation, Professor Ahmad Tukur and Secretary Saidu Usman and made available to journalists, it maintained that it has keenly followed the activities of Senator Ya’u in Senate right from when he was first elected, his subsequent elections, particularly his active roles in sensitive committees such as public Accounts, “and we can attest to his effectiveness and insightful contributions both at committee engagements and on the floor of the Senate “.
Earlier a group known as concerned citizens from Zamfara North had in a statement signed by Bello Shinkafi and Abubakar Sani accused the senator of poor performance in the National Assembly since the commencement of the 10th Senate.

They also accused him of ‘only sleeping on the floor without a single bill and not addressing insecurity in his senatorial zone as well as not consoling victims of bandit attacks’.

But in the counter statement, the National League for the Defense of Democracy and Accountability said it will amount to deliberate distortion of facts and pure blackmail to accuse an active lawmaker with many bills, motions and physically active, of sleeping on the floor, describing it as
demeaning and total falsehood.

The statement reads in parts ,”As a civil society organisation we monitor activities of lawmakers for assessments and Senator Sahabi Ya’u Alhaji from Zamfara North senatorial district is not a sleeping senator. It will be most uncharitable to describe him as one. To contemplate a discussion about his recall is even an aberration and clear lack of understanding of the workings of parliament “.

“We make this assertion because his roles in one of the most sensitive committees of the parliament ,the Public Accounts committee under the chairmanship of immediate past Senate President Ahmad Lawan ,his handling of the Senate committee he has chaired and contributions on the floor are apt. As one time principal officer of the 9th Senate , we expect the people of Zamfara North senatorial district to encourage him rather than a few elements attempting to distract him without empirical facts but baseless allegations.

“We like to educate those behind these distractions that security matters all over the world are not discussed in open sessions and it would be wrong to assume that senator Ya’u does not feel concerned about the rampaging activities of bandits and other forms of insecurity. We are aware of his efforts behind closed doors to ensure that Zamfara and indeed the North West is freed of banditry and other criminal activities. We call on people with limited knowledge of these efforts to seek knowledge before making unguided and baseless comments. The situation is Zamfara state is beyond an individual senator ,it is a matter that requires the attention of the Federal Government, the 10th Senate has collectively taken bold steps in addressing all forms of insecurity in the country and senator Ya’u has always being a part of this collective decisions and made his voice known both behind closed doors and in public where necessary”.

The statement continued, ” We recall that Senator Ya’u sponsored the bills for the establishment of the Federal Medical Center ,Kaura Namoda, Federal University of Gusau Teaching Hospital and many others. His constituency activities in terms of palliatives to the people of Zamfara North, entrepreneurship skills center at the Federal polytechnic Kaura-Namoda, provision of three brand new ambulances and other hospital equipments in four local government general hospitals of Zamfara North with training of over 500 unemployed youths in skill acquisitions were all done in the full glare ,so it’s baffling to see a few people allow themselves to be used by political opponents for their selfish reasons. This is unacceptable”.

The organisation stated further that , ” as a civil society we will never defend any political office holder who fails to leave up to their social contract with the electorate and in similar vein we will always defend actors of democracy who have done their best.

Insecurity is a major challenge in Nigeria today aided by poverty and to single out a lawmaker for this kind of attacks is most unfortunate because lawmakers are only going to be able to make budgetary provisions , pass laws as an assembly and move motions which are merely advisory . We expect the people to come harder on the executive than condemn lawmakers who are doing there bests within there limited powers as contained in the constitution on issues of insecurity .

“Just recently there were consolidated motions on all issues of insecurity by this 10th Senate and passed over to the executive for actions. We are tracking that development and it will be unfortunate to take the blame to a senator “.

Nigerians Joining APC Doing So Freely – Presidency

Published

on

In a statement issued on Sunday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, the government reaffirmed its commitment to democratic principles. Onanuga insisted that the act of politicians switching allegiance does not equate to a breakdown of democracy. Rather, it is a testament to the freedom of association enshrined within the country’s political framework.

Onanuga explained, “Nigerians joining the APC and pledging loyalty to President Tinubu are doing so freely, motivated by a belief in the positive direction of the reforms underway, intended to benefit both current citizens and future generations.”

The recent defection of prominent figures such as Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, Deputy Governor Monday Onyeme, several commissioners, and numerous local government chairmen. Notably, Okowa had served as the vice-presidential candidate for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the last general elections, making his switch particularly impactful.

The defection significantly weakened the PDP’s standing, raising questions about the opposition’s ability to effectively challenge the ruling party in the 2027 elections. Meanwhile, internal crises continue to plague other major opposition parties, including the Labour Party and the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), leading many political observers to speculate about the future competitiveness of Nigerian politics.

In response to allegations that the ruling APC might be engineering the collapse of opposition forces through coercion, the Presidency was unequivocal in its denial. Onanuga argued that the disorganisation, internal strife, and poor leadership plaguing opposition parties cannot be laid at President Tinubu’s feet.

“It is not the responsibility of President Tinubu or the APC to organise or salvage the opposition,” Onanuga stated. He added that the same critics now crying foul had previously celebrated the defection of former Kaduna State Governor Mallam Nasir El-Rufai to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the formation of regional coalitions aimed at unseating Tinubu.

He further questioned why there was no outcry when opposition figures cobbled together anti-APC alliances along regional lines, while every defection to the APC is now painted as evidence of democratic decline.

Onanuga also stressed that politicians must be free to change party affiliations without facing accusations of betrayal or coercion.

He remarked, “Without freedom of choice, association, and speech, democracy cannot survive. Politicians and citizens alike must have the liberty to support any political platform without fear.”

The Special Adviser criticised those who accuse the government of authoritarian tendencies, arguing that their very ability to express dissent freely is proof of Nigeria’s democratic vibrancy under Tinubu’s leadership.

He stated, “Those who oppose this administration do so without fear or repression. This shows that democracy is alive and well in Nigeria, despite the alarmist narratives pushed by a few discontented voices.”

Gen. Katunku Simon Gora, A Leader With Humility, Purpose, Positive Heart For Service

Published

By Tambaya Julius, Abuja

I’AM ROOTED IN HUMANITY AND DRIVEN BY IMPACTIVE SERVICE:

With nearly 30 years of exemplary military service behind me, my approach to leadership has always been anchored in humility and a profound respect for every individual. These principles are not mere concepts; they are deeply embedded values that influence every decision and action I take.

I firmly believe that true love and genuine selfless service can only originate from God. It is His presence within our hearts, minds, and strength that empowers us to extend sincere care and support to one another. My faith has been the guiding force, shaping my view that life’s true rewards come not from accolades, but from lifting others in their time of need.

Witnessing suffering – whether through poverty, disease, or adversity – stirs a deep compassion within me. I remain steadfast in my hope that one day, the essential needs of every community will be fully met. This vision continues to inspire my goals and fuels my enduring commitment to service.

MY LIFE BUILT ON PURPOSE AND INTERGRITY:

Integrity stands at the core of everything I do. I believe in living authentically, staying true to the person I am, while always striving to evolve into the person I am destined to become. God has blessed each of us with the gift of free will, and with it, the profound responsibility to use that freedom wisely.

Every goal I set is purposeful, pursued with enthusiasm, and carried out with unwavering dedication. Regardless of the final result, I find contentment in knowing that I have given my best, embracing each outcome with gratitude and humility.

Purpose, for me, is not a mere ambition; it is the reason for living. It is about making a tangible impact, however big or small, and knowing that one’s life has contributed meaningfully to the world.

FULFILLING MY CALLING OF SERVICE:

The most profound mission in life, I believe, is to answer the call for which we were created. Whether on the battlefield, within the community, or through personal growth, I have always sought to serve a purpose greater than myself.

Every act of service, no matter how modest, contributes to a larger tapestry of positive change. I am committed to ensuring that my time, my talents, and my energy are dedicated to making a difference leaving behind a legacy of compassion, strength, and hope.

To me, success is not measured by personal achievements alone but by the lives we touch and the hope we inspire. If through my service I can make even the smallest difference, then I believe I have truly fulfilled my purpose.

WE MUST UNITE IN PROGRESS AND HOPE:

I firmly hold to the belief that unity is our greatest strength. “United we stand, divided we fall” is more than just a phrase; it is a timeless truth that reminds us of the power of collective effort. By standing together, supporting one another, and striving for common goals, we create a future rich with promise and opportunity.

Growth and progress are not achieved in isolation. They flourish when communities come together, bound by mutual respect, understanding, and a shared commitment to a better tomorrow. It is through unity that we overcome adversity, and through cooperation that we achieve lasting success.

The journey ahead may be filled with challenges, but with a spirit of togetherness and an unwavering focus on service and integrity, I am confident that we can continue to grow, prosper, and uplift one another.

I STAND ON LEGACY OF SERVICE AND FAITH:

As I reflect on my life’s journey, I remain deeply grateful for the experiences that have shaped me. Every moment of service, every challenge faced, and every act of compassion has reinforced my belief that a life of humility, purpose, and unwavering faith is a life well lived.

May we all strive to serve with heart, live with purpose, and unite in a spirit of hope and progress. Together, there is no limit to what we can achieve.
