OCP Africa, in collaboration with the Ethiopian government, the African Development Bank (AFDB), the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and the Global Center on Adaptation (GCA), has launched Ethiopia’s Climate Resilient Wheat Value Chain Development Project. This project aims to address soil health issues that have been affecting millions of hectares of land in Ethiopia.

With a focus on tackling challenges such as salinity and acidity, OCP Africa will conduct comprehensive assessments of local soil conditions, climate patterns, and cropping systems. Based on these assessments, customized solutions will be developed to improve soil health and fertility. Through capacity building and farmer training programs, OCP Africa aims to bridge the yield gap in Ethiopia’s wheat value chain.

The project includes mapping 1 million hectares of soils, reaching over 1 million farmers through various initiatives, and establishing 4 Farmer Hubs across the country. The collaboration between OCP Africa and the Ethiopian Ministry of Agriculture has already yielded promising results. Since 2019, customized fertilizer formulas have been developed and tested, leading to significant productivity improvements on acid soils. Large-scale demonstrations, conducted in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and regional institutes, have confirmed substantial yield increases using these adapted formulas.

OCP Africa, a subsidiary of OCP Group, is committed to supporting Ethiopia’s efforts towards a resilient and sustainable agricultural sector. As a South-led global leader rooted in Africa, OCP Africa aims to contribute to a just agricultural transition that prioritizes the needs of small holder farmers. With operations in over 35 countries, OCP Africa works hand-in-hand with farmers and partners across the continent to develop customized plant and soil nutrition solutions.
