In a historic move, the Olubadan-in-Council has officially nominated Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, the esteemed Balogun of Ibadanland, as the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland, marking a significant transition in leadership.
The nomination of Oba Olakulehin follows the passing of Oba Lekan Balogun, who served diligently until his demise at the age of 81.
The approval of Oba Olakulehin’s nomination by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde underscores the council’s confidence in his ability to lead.
The decision to nominate Oba Olakulehin was proposed by Osi Balogun, Oba Lateef Adebimpe, during a pivotal Olubadan-in-Council meeting convened at the prestigious Olubadan’s Palace in Oja’ba, Ibadan.
High Chief Rashidi Ladoja, the Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland and former state governor, affirmed the council’s resolution, expressing optimism for gubernatorial consent.
Following the council’s nomination, the ball is now in the governor’s court. Once Governor Makinde gives his consent, arrangements for the coronation ceremony will swiftly proceed, marking a new era for the revered traditional institution.
The gathering of kingmakers included prominent figures such as High Chief Rashidi Ladoja, Oba Eddy Oyewole, Oba Abiodun Kola-Daisi, Oba Hamidu Ajibade, Oba Adebayo Akande, Oba Lateef Adebimpe, Oba Kola Adegbola, Oba Dada Isioye, and Oba Abiodun Azeez, showcasing a diverse array of perspectives and insights.
The nomination process faced its fair share of challenges, with Oba Tajudeen Ajibola, the Otun Balogun of Ibadanland, raising concerns about Oba Olakulehin’s health. However, Oba Olakunlehin’s family vehemently refuted these claims, alleging ulterior motives and emphasizing his suitability for the role.
Despite differing opinions, unity prevailed as High Chief Rashidi Ladoja dismissed Oba Ajibola’s assertions, highlighting the importance of medical expertise in such matters.
This unity of purpose underscores the commitment of all stakeholders to uphold the integrity of the selection process and ensure a smooth transition of power.
As the community eagerly awaits the governor’s decision, the nomination of Oba Olakulehin heralds a new chapter in the rich tapestry of Ibadan’s cultural heritage.
